What is Celiac Disease?

Diagnosed through blood tests, celiac disease is a hereditary disease where the consumption of gluten triggers an immune response in the small intestine. If a person with celiac disease consumes gluten, the lining of his/her small intestine may become damaged and unable to absorb some nutrients, leading to malnutrition and anemia. If left untreated, the disease could cause loss of calcium and bone density, infertility, and seizures. There is no cure for celiac disease and the only way to manage it is to adopt a lifelong gluten-free diet.
