What is omega-3-6-9?

As cardiovascular diseases and maintaining a healthy diet tends to be a popular topic in the media, we may heard of Omega-3, -6 and -9. But what are these? Omega -3 and -6 are types of polyunsaturated fat which are vital for all systems in our body to function normally. While Omega-9 can be synthesized in our body, both Omega-3 and -6 can only be absorbed through foods that we ingest.

Omega-3 can increase the amount of high-density lipoprotein (also known as good cholesterol), which can reduce the risk of heart diseases effectively. It can be found in nuts, flaxseed or fishes, such as salmons, tunas and mackerels.

According to the latest research, increase the intake of omega-6 does not actually affect the rate of having heart diseases. However, it can lower the content of cholesterol in blood. Nuts, corn and soybean products are rich in omega-6.

Omega-9 is a kind of monounsaturated fat, that can be synthesized in our body. For those with heart disease and diabetes, replacing saturated fat with monounsaturated fat can improve blood cholesterol levels.
