About Cataract

Cataracts are one of the three main causes of blindness in Hong Kong. It is not necessary to wait until the cataract becomes mature. When there is a significant decrease in vision that affects your work or daily activities, cataract extraction should be encouraged. Surgical risks increase as the cataract matures.

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens. It blocks the refraction of light to the retina and causes deterioration of vision. Cataract can develop into acute glaucoma, causing headaches and pain in the eye. It is important to consult your doctor if any of the above symptoms should occur.

Small Incision Cataract Surgery

Cataract Extraction is the most effective treatment available. Using state-of-the-art equipment, our Eye Clinic provides small incision cataract surgery which can be performed under local anesthesia with complete patient comfort. Recovery after this operation is significantly faster than with the older traditional surgery.

Phacoemulsification is the most advanced method and utilizes an ultrasonic probe to soften and break up the lens, thus allowing the lens with its cataract to be removed by suction.

Implantation of an intraocular lens restores the patient's vision. This plastic lens requires no after-care, and becomes a permanent part of the eye.
