Consultant In Urology Dr. Chan Lung Wai: Men’s Health Alert! Screening and Treatment for Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men in Hong Kong. In 2024, it became the third most common male cancer in the city, with more than 3,000 new cases each year. The prostate is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. Shaped like a walnut, it is responsible for producing and releasing seminal fluid. Early symptoms are often not obvious, and many patients are diagnosed through a digital rectal examination or a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. Therefore, regular check-ups are very important.
Treatment options depend on the patient’s age, cancer stage, and overall health condition. Early-stage prostate cancer can be treated by surgically removing the prostate and surrounding tissues, which also helps doctors accurately determine the cancer stage. In recent years, minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgeries have become increasingly popular due to smaller wounds and faster recovery. Robotic-assisted surgery can further enhance precision and help preserve urinary control and sexual function.
Although prostate cancer cannot be completely prevented, maintaining a low-fat diet, avoiding exposure to carcinogens, and undergoing regular screening can help with early detection and disease control. Men aged 40 or above are advised to have a prostate check-up every year. Early detection and appropriate treatment can greatly improve the chance of recovery.
