As a trusted one-stop comprehensive hospital for the New Territories West community, Hong Kong Adventist Hospital – Tsuen Wan (HKAH – TW) takes pride in celebrating a major milestone in its history – its 60th anniversary. Ever since its establishment in 1964, HKAH – TW has been dedicated to living up to its mission of ‘Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ’, by providing quality medical services to the community. Based on its corporate values of Compassion, Excellence, Wholeness, Integrity and Family, the Hospital is fully committed to healing and saving lives. Through its charity foundation, it has been giving back to the community with a multitude of medical and healthcare services.

International recognition In the last six decades, Tsuen Wan has evolved from an industrial center into a thriving commercial, residential and tourist hub. In the course of this transformation, HKAH – TW remains a steadfast, integral member of the community. Through the unwavering efforts of each and every member of its professional healthcare and support staff, the Hospital has grown into a full-service medical institution with about 1,000 staff members. As a not-for-profit organisation, HKAH – TW invests its nett proceeds on enhancing the quality of its medical services, equipment and environment. Over the years, the Hospital has continuously developed its advanced operating theatres, GP and Specialist out-patient services, 24-hour Urgent Care Service, clinical testing laboratory, rehabilitation center, pharmacy, specialist clinics and other disciplinary treatments, thereby providing a high-quality, one-stop medical service for the community.

HKAH – TW has thrice received the National Quality Approval recognition from the US-based Joint Commission International. It is the first hospital in Hong Kong to receive this accreditation, a testament to the international standards it has achieved.

Putting its core values into practice Encompassing Compassion, Excellence, Wholeness, Integrity and Family as its core values, HKAH – TW does not treat patients as mere medical cases, but has embedded humanistic care and compassion into the entire healing process, from diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation to scheduled follow-ups, providing a holistic service and support. In highlighting the contributions of frontline medical staff, Mr Alex Lan, President and CEO of HKAH, expresses his appreciation for their professional services and attitude. “At the time when our Urgent Care Service was newly established, a man suffering from cardiac arrest was on his way in a taxi to a hospital in the Kowloon area. When his condition worsened en route, the taxi driver took him to HKAH – TW instead,” he recalls. “As he was already unconscious on arrival, our A&E doctors immediately attended to his condition and operated on him. I’m pleased to report he has now fully recovered.” “To be able to save a patient’s life fills us with immense satisfaction and gratification,” he remarks. “It is also one of our core missions.”

Expanding with an eye for the underprivileged As the only private hospital in New Territories West, HKAH – TW serves a population of nearly two million people. In response to a growth in local population and the impact of an ageing population, the Hospital embarked on an expansion in 2020 with the addition of three storeys of hospital beds which will progressively increase to a total of 470 to cope with rising demands. The low-charge beds and integrated wards have already commenced services in 2022, while the storey for private single beds is expected to receive patients in 2024.

In accordance with the terms of the government land grant, HKAH – TW is committed to designating at least 20% of its beds as low-charge beds to help alleviate the stringent supply situation in public hospitals. Currently, the Hospital has 64 low-charge beds for applicants aged 15 who hold a Hong Kong permanent residence identity card. Mr Lan points out that the provision of low-charge beds aligns with the Hospital’s mission of serving the New Territories West community, helping shorten waiting time, and providing patients with timely and high-quality medical care. Patients also benefit from special designated discounts and medical care packages, such as in breast lumpectomy, endoscopic cholecystectomy, colon endoscopy and gastroscopy. “In the past, many patients had the wrong notion that low-charge meant a lower level of service and healing environment,” Mr Lan clarifies. “But in fact, there is absolutely no difference in the service provided to low-charge patients and ordinary patients. HKAH – TW applies exactly the same high standard of service to each and every patient under our care.”

Standing shoulder to shoulder with the community For the last sixty years, HKAH – TW has paid close attention to the health and wellbeing of the community. In collaboration with local stakeholders, the Hospital has organised a wide variety of health promotion and wellbeing activities. With the support of the charity foundation, the Hospital has helped hundreds of patients suffering from cataract and coronary angioplasty, ensuring the underprivileged receive timely medical support. It is a shining example of how the culture of care and compassion has found roots in the community.

Mr Lan points out that some elderly may have only minor health problems that do not require hospital care. As an integral member of the community, HKAH – TW does not limit its services to the hospital, but reaches out in its care and support for the local community, cementing its close inter-relationship. “Our Lifestyle Management Center is an active organiser of community activities, providing free consultation and simple body checks for the elderly who can thus benefit from professional medical advice, and obtain valuable information on how to lead a healthy life,” he says.
