Cage-free egg Commitment
Adventist Restaurant at Hong Kong Adventist Hospital - Tsuen Wan is the first hospital in Hong Kong to the use of cage-free eggs in its inpatient menu. We are committed to promoting sustainability and fulfilling our corporate social responsibility. Hong Kong Adventist Hospital - Tsuen Wan recognizes that animal welfare is an integral part of driving responsible supply chains in the food service industry. As of 2024, we have fully transitioned to the use of cage-free eggs in our inpatient menu, enabling our chefs to prepare high-quality dishes that uphold the three core values of environmental sustainability, food safety, and animal welfare.
Mr. Wong Chi Wing, Registered Dietitian and the Director of Food & Dietetic at Hong Kong Adventist Hospital, stated, "Hong Kong Adventist Hospital is committed to promoting a balanced vegetarian diet. Vegetarian meals are rich in fiber, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, while being low in saturated fats. Multiple studies have shown the excellent preventive and therapeutic effects of a vegetarian diet for various chronic diseases. Our hospital is the first in Hong Kong to exclusively provide vegetarian options, we have transitioned to the use of cage-free eggs. This decision ensures the health and safety of our inpatients while prioritizing animal welfare."
Animal welfare and food safety organizations worldwide encourage the use of cage-free eggs as it is not only more humane for animals but also safer for consumers. Hens raised in cage systems are confined to small cages throughout their lives, which restricts their movement. The European Food Safety Authority and various research groups have found that the probability of contamination by major Salmonella strains is significantly reduced by 25 times on non-cage egg farms compared to cage farms. Several countries have already banned the use of battery cages for egg production, including the European Union, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Canada, India, and some regions of the United States.
We firmly believe that this commitment will contribute to enhancing animal welfare standards, improving food safety, and promoting sustainable development. Hong Kong Adventist Hospital - Tsuen Wan will continue to strive for the highest standards in our dining options.
