Adventist Health Education Series - Pay Attention to Children's Respiratory Health: Prevent Common Respiratory Infections

Dr. Yeung Man Fung, Pediatrician: Pay Attention to Children's Respiratory Health and Prevent Common Respiratory Infections

Hong Kong’s unpredictable weather, combined with the fact that children's immune systems are not yet fully developed, makes them particularly susceptible to various respiratory illnesses. Common respiratory infections in children include the common cold, seasonal flu, croup, bronchitis, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia.

To effectively prevent these diseases, parents should focus on the following: maintain good personal hygiene by washing hands thoroughly and frequently; avoid crowded places; ensure children wear masks when they are sick; and adhere to vaccination schedules. The current vaccination program covers common vaccines, such as the pneumococcal vaccine. Additionally, children aged six months or older should receive the seasonal flu vaccine annually to boost their immunity.
