Dr. Ng Wai Ting: Is a Breast Lump a Warning Sign? Self-Examination Is the First Key Step!

Many women become anxious when they discover a breast lump, fearing it may be breast cancer. However, in reality, premenstrual breast tenderness, fibrocystic changes, or benign fibroadenomas can also cause lumps.

That said, early-stage breast cancer often presents with no symptoms, so any lump should be taken seriously—never ignore it.

To safeguard your health, women are advised to perform monthly breast self-examinations a few days after the end of their period. Use the pads of your fingers to feel the entire breast in a circular motion, and pay attention to:

  • New lumps
  • Dimpling of the skin
  • Skin discoloration
  • Unusual nipple discharge

If any suspicious signs appear, seek medical attention promptly. Based on your age and condition, your doctor may recommend appropriate screenings, such as breast ultrasound or mammography. If needed, a simple needle biopsy may be performed—no surgery required.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in Hong Kong, with over 5,000 new cases each year. Women who have a family history, early menstruation or late menopause, have never given birth, or experience high levels of stress face a higher risk and should stay especially vigilant.

Remember: Don’t panic—but don’t delay.
Regular screening and early detection dramatically improve survival. In fact, early-stage breast cancer has a cure rate of over 90%.
