NEWSTART® Program

Chronic, degenerating diseases are now the most common causes of death in Hong Kong. The two leading causes of death are cancer and heart diseases, 14.6%. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, and obesity has also increased. Experts have agreed that the only way to prevent and treat these health problems are changes in our daily lifestyle.

The Lifestyle Management Center of Adventist Health (HK) has more than thirty years of solid experience and has helped countless people recover their health and true self.

"NEWSTART" is an acronym for the eight lifestyle-principles: Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunlight, Temperance, Air (Fresh), Rest and Trust in God. Participants stay in a health resort to restore their physical, psycho-social, and spiritual well being in a 'lifestyle reconditioning' program.

The NEWSTART program originated from the Weimar Institute in California, and is advocated by renowned doctors and scientists, such as cardiologists Dr. Dean Ornish and T. Collin campbell of Cornell University.

Experience in the U.S. showed that some 50 % of hypertensive patients had their blood pressure return to normal within a three-week period. For them, long term medication is a thing of the past. 50% of those suffering from angina reported complete relief from symptoms after three weeks on the "NEWSTART" Lifestyle program, About 80% of those with painful diabetic neuropathy have their symptoms totally relieved. Many individuals with high triglyceride levels found that their levels dropped significantly often to within the normal range.

Vegetarian Cooking

With generous use of whole-grain breads and cereals, vegetables and fresh fruits, a moderate use of legumes, nuts, low-fat milk as well as diary products, a vegetarian diet is not necessarily boring. Eggs should be used sparingly, and all meat, including fish and fowl be avoided.

Throughout the year, our experienced chef would hold vegetarian cooking classes at regular intervals in association with doctors, health educators, and registered dieticians.

The course includes:

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner recipes
Lectures using the most current material on diet, the prevention of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer
Low fat and high fiber menus, providing balanced vegetarian meals

We provide samples of the recipes, handouts and hands on experience on how to prepare the vegetarian food.
