'NEWSTART' – Lifestyle Modification
Hong Kong is no exception to any other developed country. The leading causes of death reflect a shift from infectious diseases to the chronic degenerative diseases. According to the Hong Kong Department of Health 2003/2004 Annual Report, the two leading causes of death were cancer 31.6%, and heart disease 14.6%. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, and obesity have also increased. The government healthcare system faces a great challenge with this increase in chronic disease and the associated financial burden. In recent years, the Hong Kong Government has paid increased attention to the promotion of good health, which is something the Lifestyle Management Center of Adventist Health (HK) has been doing for more than thirty years, with an emphasis on disease prevention, and ‘holistic’ healthcare.
‘NEWSTART’ is an acronym for the eight lifestyle-principles; Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunlight, Temperance, Air (Fresh), Rest, and Trust in God. The program consists of a one week trip to a health resort, and is originated from the Weimar Institute in California, U.S.A. It uses the concept of ‘lifestyle reconditioning’, to prevent and treat chronic degenerative diseases. In conjunction with the lectures, demonstrations and practice, the participants learn how to prepare low fat, low salt, and high fiber meals. They participate in a daily exercise program, learn how to control stress, and get adequate rest and sleep, and receive hydrotherapy and massage. They also learn the important concepts relating to physical, psycho-social, and spiritual well being.
The ‘lifestyle-reconditioning’ program is supported and promoted by several well-known doctors and scientists, such as Dr. Dean Ornish, a respected cardiologist, and T. Collin Campbell, from Cornell University. Weimar Institute has accumulated more than thirty years experience in treating chronic degenerative diseases. Over the years it was observed that some 50% of hypertensive patients had their blood pressure return to normal within a three-week period on the ‘NEWSTART’ program, and they no longer required their medication. Approximately 80% of those suffering from painful diabetic neuropathy reported total relief from pain in their feet and hands. Many individuals with high triglyceride levels found that their levels dropped significantly, often to within the normal range, and around 50% of those suffering from angina reported complete relief from symptoms after three weeks on the ‘NEWSTART’ Lifestyle program.
Promoting healthy living is a long-term commitment. It requires collaboration and support from many healthcare professionals. With our hospital’s ‘mission’ and ‘vision’, we promote the “Total Health” concept, in order to enhance the quality of life of the people of Hong Kong.
