History
Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital, the only private
non-profit hospital in Tsuen Wan, has been serving its community
since 1964. It is one of the 120 hospitals in the
world established by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
In 1960,
at the age of eighty when most men are retired, Dr. Harry Willis
Miller was asked by the church to come to Hong Kong to establish
a hospital. He and his wife, Mary, gladly accepted this invitation.
Dr. Miller was no stranger to Hong Kong as he first came to
China in 1903.
In 1925, Dr. Miller established the Shanghai Sanitarium and Hospital.
Over the years he made many friends among the business leaders in
Shanghai, and many of these businessmen built factories in Hong
Kong in the late 1940s. Dr. Miller now turned to these friends for
help and he was especially encouraged by Mr. Tong Ping Yuen, the
owner of the Southseas Textile Factory, to build a hospital in Tsuen
Wan. Mr. Tong gave the first donation to pay for one floor; the
Medical and Health Department helped in securing a land grant from
the Hong Kong Government; and the Jockey Club provided funds for
the ground floor. Funds came from many other friends but were insufficient
to complete the building. A decision was made to make the foundation
strong enough to add the top floor later. The American Government
provided the money to equip the hospital and in May, 1964 the Hospital
was officially opened. Five years later, the American Government
gave enough money to build the top floor, thus completing the hospital
building in June 1970.
In 1964, the Hospital was the only concrete building on the hill
and was surrounded by many wooden squatter huts. As time has gone
by, the Hospital now finds itself among numerous concrete residential
skyscrapers. Regardless of the changes, Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital
is still on the hill serving its community with continuous improved
quality services.
